About this artwork
Rickert wonders- what does one observe when looking out at a large pond or lake? Is it the "long view", with birds flying overhead, a hazy far shore, and a large expanse of green trees? In this painting, Elizabeth prefers a closer, more intimate view, inviting the viewer to experience the beauty, calm, and silence of being in that place. The experience of seeing the reflection of the cloud on the water, the languorously floating lilies and pads…
and shadow on top of the water surface ,and the suggestion of fish under the surface. She wants the viewer to see , in the near distance the suggestion of hanging foliage from which the shadow is cast. These are the elements of the mysterious cycles of life, death, and reemergence.
Elizabeth has gathered information from the many artist colonies to which she has been invited around the US and Mexico. She has photographed extensively so that she can decide what elements are important to her. She uses many of her photo to create a painting.

Elizabeth Rickert is an award-winning artist based in the United States whose paintings have been featured in numerous solo and group exhibitions nationally. Her detailed impressions of plants, animals, and nature convey not only the beauty of nature but also solitude and the complexity of rich moments. In her artistic process, Rickert employs varying techniques with oils on canvas.
She started as a sculptor, and so, approaches nature with a sculptor's eye- seeing the way shapes and forms and light and darkness interact.
