About this artwork
This painting began as something entirely different.
I was halfway through another work of a horse standing beneath a luminous moon. It felt fitting for October. Atmospheric. Dramatic. Technically strong. But it did not feel alive to me. I kept returning to it, and each time something was missing. It was beautiful, yet hollow.
So I made the decision to cover it...
I worked over the original image in restrained monochromatic layers, allowing the… composition to quiet down. The moon disappeared. The excess vanished. From that transformation emerged something more instinctive - a Kelpie.
In Scottish folklore, Kelpies are shape-shifting water spirits, often appearing as a magnificent horses near rivers and lochs. Not purely malevolent, not purely benevolent. They are wild, ancient, and deeply tied to untamed landscapes. Kelpies represents allure, power, and the thin boundary between beauty and danger.
Ellie Rich is a Ukrainian-born painter and photographer, now based in Colorado, whose multidisciplinary background weaves visual storytelling, fine art, and photography into her creative practice. She employs expressive, atmospheric techniques—layering acrylic paint on large canvases to evoke depth, cinematic light, and nuanced movement, intuitively blending natural, muted palettes with dramatic contrasts. Her works explore themes of memory, mysticism, and resilience, often through animal forms and windswept landscapes. Ellie’s art radiates a quiet power and invites personal reflection, conveying an otherworldly stillness and emotional presence that lingers long after the viewer departs.
