About this artwork
“SLOW DOWN AND SMELL THE ROSES”
I began this painting in 2025, sometime before winter set in, and finished it quietly in the opening days of 2026.
The idea came from the most vivid moment of a dream I had, where I found myself contemplating a cat resting deep inside a massive rose bush, branches folding around him, growing outward in every direction. He was settled there as if he belonged to it. Unhurried. Utterly unbothered by my presence. He… leaned toward one bloom, close enough that his whiskers brushed the petals, breathing in its scent with complete ease…
The image followed me into waking hours. Not insistently, but persistently. It surfaced at unexpected moments, often when days moved too quickly. A reminder, subtle but persistent, of how easily we rush past what is already there.
I liked the feeling it left me with, and I wanted to stay with it a little longer. Painting it felt like a natural way to do that.
Ellie Rich is a Ukrainian-born painter and photographer, now based in Colorado, whose multidisciplinary background weaves visual storytelling, fine art, and photography into her creative practice. She employs expressive, atmospheric techniques—layering acrylic paint on large canvases to evoke depth, cinematic light, and nuanced movement, intuitively blending natural, muted palettes with dramatic contrasts. Her works explore themes of memory, mysticism, and resilience, often through animal forms and windswept landscapes. Ellie’s art radiates a quiet power and invites personal reflection, conveying an otherworldly stillness and emotional presence that lingers long after the viewer departs.
