About this artwork
Red Riding Hood was always one of those stories I questioned. I was far more interested in the space between the girl and the wolf, and in what might happen if the story took a different turn.
I’ve long been drawn to the idea of her choosing not to fear him. Not out of naivety, but awareness. A decision to stay, to look closer, and to understand rather than run. In this interpretation, the wolf is no longer a simple adversary, but something more… complex, shaped as much by her presence as by his own nature. Their closeness carries tension, but also a quiet sense of calm. He is not softened, and she is not fragile. They simply exist side by side, held in a moment that could become many things at once.
This painting grew from that idea and took many weeks to complete, built layer by layer until the connection between them felt right.

Ellie Rich is a Ukrainian-born painter and photographer, now based in Colorado, whose multidisciplinary background weaves visual storytelling, fine art, and photography into her creative practice. She employs expressive, atmospheric techniques—layering acrylic paint on large canvases to evoke depth, cinematic light, and nuanced movement, intuitively blending natural, muted palettes with dramatic contrasts. Her works explore themes of memory, mysticism, and resilience, often through animal forms and windswept landscapes. Ellie’s art radiates a quiet power and invites personal reflection, conveying an otherworldly stillness and emotional presence that lingers long after the viewer departs.
