About this artwork
In this fine-art underwater macro photograph, the tube worm becomes a poetic study of line, rhythm, and light. Its fan-shaped crown unfolds like a living ornament, delicate rays vibrating in the water and making the current visible. The interplay of deep petrol blue, turquoise, and warm gold tones makes the scene glow, while the shallow depth of field dissolves the background into soft fields of color. The result is an almost abstract composition:… delicate, serene, and yet full of movement.
They live protected inside a self-constructed or calcareous tube and use their feathery crest as a filter: they trap plankton and suspended particles from the water. If disturbed, they retract the crest into the tube with lightning speed, a precise protective mechanism that underscores their vulnerability. The image thus reveals not only aesthetic beauty but also the quiet perfection of a creature that exists in constant dialogue with the current.
Elmar Laubender is a fine art photographer who has been exploring underwater worlds around the globe for over 30 years, translating his fascination into artistic works. He consciously works with manual camera techniques and shapes his visual language through precise composition, reduction, and formal condensation – in close-up shots that are sometimes abstract and often painterly in their effect.
Depending on the underwater situation, depth, and available light, he uses natural lighting, supplemented by flash or continuous light, to selectively highlight structures, colors, and atmospheres. His works convey stillness and contemplative presence while simultaneously awakening an awareness of the fragile beauty and vulnerability of the oceans.
