About this artwork
In this fine-art underwater macro photograph, the torch coral becomes an almost abstract composition: softly swaying tentacles, covered in delicate texture, end in milky-white tips that float in space like tiny pearls of light. The warm spectrum of rosé, apricot, and coral orange makes the subject glow—as if the reef were luminous from within. The shallow depth of field transforms the background into a still, velvety stage, turning structure into… movement and biology into poetry.
In its natural habitat, it often resides in more sheltered reef areas with gentle currents, where its tentacles can dance freely. Like many corals, it lives in symbiosis with light-loving algae, but also absorbs fine food particles and plankton from the current. Its stinging power protects it within the reef and serves as a reminder that this delicate beauty is also a formidable creature.
Elmar Laubender is a fine art photographer who has been exploring underwater worlds around the globe for over 30 years, translating his fascination into artistic works. He consciously works with manual camera techniques and shapes his visual language through precise composition, reduction, and formal condensation – in close-up shots that are sometimes abstract and often painterly in their effect.
Depending on the underwater situation, depth, and available light, he uses natural lighting, supplemented by flash or continuous light, to selectively highlight structures, colors, and atmospheres. His works convey stillness and contemplative presence while simultaneously awakening an awareness of the fragile beauty and vulnerability of the oceans.
