About this artwork
This work was originally meant to celebrate a hundredth birthday.
When she passed away just seventeen days before turning one hundred, it did not feel right to release the painting into the world.
So I let it rest.
Yet the vibrant yellow continued to draw my attention from the corner of my studio. I eventually returned to the canvas. What began as a celebration of a milestone became a tribute to an extraordinary life.
The golden background remained;… the rest transformed.
Betty White was far more than a beloved comedian. She held one of the longest television careers of any woman in history, authored several books, and dedicated much of her life to animal welfare and equal rights. She used her platform to create space for others — even when it came with resistance.
This painting is not about nostalgia.
It is about resilience, courage, and radiance.
A reminder of her words:
“You’re never too old for anything.”
Els Devrieze is a Belgian painter whose work explores intensity, stillness, and the physical presence of paint.
Working primarily in acrylic on canvas, she builds layered surfaces that function as inner landscapes rather than literal depictions. Her practice is driven by intuition and material engagement, allowing tension and balance to emerge through texture, color, and restraint.
Devrieze’s work invites sustained looking, offering space for reflection without prescribing a fixed narrative.
