Monkey King examines our long-standing fascination with powerful leaders. Using religious iconography, it reflects how deeply this desire for a dominant central figure runs, rooted partly in the Neolithic era when strength, protection, and resource control elevated certain individuals to authority.
The work also highlights the drawbacks of such hierarchies—our tendency to choose aggressive rather than empathetic leaders, the child-like social dynamic… this creates, and the exclusion of those who do not conform or submit.
Ultimately, the painting considers the tension between our egalitarian, freedom-loving instincts and our comfort with tradition and hierarchy, a conflict that still shapes society today.
