About this artwork
This artwork was inspired by a famous Banksy image of a masked man throwing flowers. The artist has used hessian from industrial coffee sacks, collaged onto stretched canvas as a basis for overpainting with mixed media and acrylics. This technique dates back to 2011 and the work is number 19 of an ongoing series. His unique treatment of bold colour and texture remains a recognisable feature of his output, but here it is mixed with more than a hint… of subtle humour and innuendo.
" With my works in the coffee sack series I have been particularly conscious of the legacy of the source material itself and its strong cultural and political heritage. The deliberate decision to leave some printed text on the sacks unadulterated within my compositions is a way of highlighting the personal and political background story of their construction. Alluding here to street art for me increases the legitimacy and potency of this work."
« I am constantly searching for answers and questions relating to the human condition. Art reveals our greatness and our vulnerability. »
