About this artwork
Here Davis has deliberately combined visual elements which he has exploited in his more recent work to produce a painting which is groundreaking in its ability to communicate to the descerning collector. His customary mastery of colour and pattern assimilate mark making to another level, with references to many of the established modern masters integrated within this visual tour de force.
The artist wrote:
'Coloured Sails', seems to me a tale of… hope and tragedy in one.Today many migrants fleeing from war-torn countries, embarking precarious journeys in search of sanctuary. By contrast we have the dreams of many to escape, by way of coloured sails, to new harbours of peace and tranquility. These contrasting situations were prominent in my thinking behind the piece. How can we justify following the ultimate dream without acknowledging the responsibility we all have to those who seek it without hope?
