About this artwork
The American Shield is a work that celebrates and at the same time questions the myth of the American hero. The shield, an iconic symbol of defense, justice and moral ideals, is here transformed into a mosaic of stories: a visual collage that unites epic and pop culture.
The starry, streaked background harks back to the American flag, but in a dustier, more sparse way, as if the nation were a memory, a suggestion, or something that is dissolving.…
The illumination reveals two fundamental archetypes: The star, emblem of hope and guidance and The A, initial of America but also of Authority, Avenger, Soul.
The work reflects on the double nature of the symbol: on the one hand the shield as a defense of the weak, on the other as an instrument of propaganda or power. Captain America is the hero who embodies the American dream, but today that dream is fragmented, recomposed like glued cartoons: no longer a pure ideal, but a set of narratives, contradictions and collective memory.
Fabio Tolu, a self-taught artist, stands out for the creation of three-dimensional compositions that blend sculpture, painting and installation, deriving from the world of construction. Using a variety of materials such as resin, stucco, acrylics, metal and LED lights, Tolu creates material and luminous works, where visual and conceptual art merge. His works reflect social, cultural and political themes, transforming ideas and reflections into concrete and powerful images, and inviting the viewer to look beyond the surface to discover hidden truths.
