About this artwork
Part of an exhibition on cabins, this painting tells the story of how a little girl experiences her father's new relationship by associating her stepmother with a hen. The metaphor highlights that the hen in the artwork has a cage all to herself.
The youngest was easily coddled by Dad's new "girlfriend." But my siblings and I, still reeling from our parents' divorce, weren't quite ready to see "Maguy" as a surrogate mother. We were living the real… world, surrounded by a chicken coop, even though our father could afford to house the family in a dream home in the southern part of town. His small business was booming (as a certain singer might say), and his eggs filled the shelves of every store in New Caledonia. He was too attached to his chickens and his employees, whom he'd taken in as teenagers, to leave the place where it had all begun.
