About this artwork
A bunch of white grapes fills the entire surface, with no background or context: just the berries overlapping until they spill over the edges. The close-up transforms the still life into something almost abstract.
The light passes through the pulp instead of resting on the skin. Each grape is constructed in successive layers, from the lemon yellow of the exposed areas to the emerald green of the shadows, with cool violets in the interstices. The… pink and coppery stalks punctuate the composition and keep it together.
Amatruda paper from Amalfi, handmade, has an irregular grain that holds water in unpredictable ways: small variations that are impossible to reproduce on industrial paper.
Late Summer is the suspended moment before the harvest, when the heat of months concentrates inside the fruit.
