About this artwork
The peony is the flower of generosity, the one that holds nothing back: it opens completely, without reserve. In this painting, I wanted to capture that moment of full openness, with the pink petals multiplying outward against a deep black background that enhances their luminosity.
I worked with layered oils to achieve the almost tactile softness of the petals, with transitions from intense magenta to pale pink to pure white in the highlights. The… contrast with the black creates an almost theatrical effect, like a flower illuminated by a spotlight.
Peony n.2 is part of my research on the flower as a subject capable of containing complex emotions—beauty, fragility, abundance—in a simple and universal form.
