About this artwork
In this enigmatic painting, a man climbs a ladder that extends upwards, a symbol of spiritual ascension and inner search. However, the man seems intent on sabotaging his own path, holding a water pistol with which he sprays water on his feet, making each step more difficult and unstable. The ladder, which should lead to the door of perception and enlightenment, thus becomes a difficult and tiring path.
Above, a closed door seems to await the man,… representing the threshold of perception and awareness. The ascent seems to have as its objective the opening of this door, but the man's action suggests that he himself is placing obstacles in his own path.
The painting invites us to reflect on the role of the individual in his or her personal and spiritual growth. We are the architects of our own destiny, and often it is our own actions that determine the success or failure of our path.
