About this artwork

It is a multi-layered work where material, memory, and the image of the steppe converge. Created with MDF, acrylic, resin, textured pastes, and Karaganda coal, the material itself becomes the conceptual core of the piece.The upper layer evokes ancient petroglyphs — schematic figures, signs, and symbols as traces of human presence. They function not as direct references, but as a universal visual language of early human expression.
Below, the steppe… unfolds as a dark, dense space. Coal forms a textured, almost relief-like surface, carrying the weight, history, and energy of the land. It becomes a symbol of the territory itself. The work is built on contrast: light symbolic imagery against the heavy material presence of coal, creating a dialogue between past and present, sign and matter, culture and nature. Petroglyphs reflects on the continuity of time — where ancient marks of human thought persist within contemporary material, and the land holds memory within its very substance.
