It was discovered in the 18th century that diamond is an allotropic modification of carbon. The same element is thus transformed into a common, opaque and soft substance under certain conditions and into a rare, transparent and hard substance under other conditions.
I find this act of creation truly remarkable, the ability to bring forth perfect and pure forms from the same element, solely through choice and arrangement.
