About this artwork
The image was created as a metaphor for the reflection in a mirror, which shows less of reality and more of one's own idealized image. This inner vision of how one would like to be often contradicts actual appearance. Every act of self-reflection therefore generates an echo—a feedback that reveals more about one's own longings and perceptions than about what truly is.
During the painting process, I asked myself: What do I see? Is that me? Or do… I only see the image I would like to have? A tension arises between self-image, ideal image, and reality, which I wanted to make visible in this work.
Echo is therefore less a portrait than a pictorial attempt to capture the moment when one encounters one's desired image – and the answer that comes back.
