Like a child’s picture book this painting sets out a number of random objects together with their names, all found while beachcombing. The sea and sky stretch across the top of the painting and just below them a wooden groyne holds back the sand. At the same time this barrier seems to offer a kind of protection to the memories these items hold, both ancient and contemporary, durable and fragile, familiar and strange. Gertie Young is a British Artist currently based in South London. She has always been a fanatic painter and drawer, stemming back to when she was a child, using art as a way to communicate and visualise her ideas. She studied at Hornsey School of Art, thereafter continuing her practice professionally.
