About this artwork
With Dedalo, I wanted to transform the surface into a mental device, even before it becomes a visual one. The full, compact, almost absolute yellow isn't used for decoration: it creates a field of energy in which the canvas folds, rolls up, and becomes a path. I was interested in the work having something of the labyrinth, not as an illustrative image, but as an experience: a movement that attracts, disorients, and forces the gaze to enter.
The… strips of canvas, raised and folded upon themselves, generate a structure that lies somewhere between material art, mixed media, and wall sculpture. In this work, the myth of Daedalus becomes a reflection on construction, ingenuity, and confusion: an interior architecture, both rigorous and unstable, where painting ceases to be merely a surface and begins to occupy space.
Giampiero Riccobello, born in Rome, works between Rome and Milan, using painting, sculpture, and unconventional materials, drawing on a background in art history. His style oscillates between informal abstraction and conceptual exploration, favoring processes of layering, subtraction, and material interventions on neutral surfaces, with earthy colors and unexpected accents. His works evoke an indirect human presence and transform common materials into symbols, conveying a sense of suspension, intimacy, and a reflection on memory and the passage of time.
