About this artwork
Pressure Fold belongs to my series Encapsulated Gesture: small-format oil paintings created on recycled supports and housed within frames constructed from reclaimed gilt mouldings, carrying the marks of time. Each work carries the same gestural intensity and emotional weight as my larger canvases while held within a more intimate scale.
Here, the figure is compressed into its own gesture, caught between motion and stillness. The “fold” is both literal… and metaphorical: a bending of form, a tension under pressure, a body contained yet straining against its boundaries. The brushwork remains instinctive and layered, preserving the immediacy of the mark while holding ambiguity in the pose.
The recycled gilt frame is integral, and it transforms the work into an encapsulated whole, making visible the act of reclamation and renewal. For collectors, Pressure Fold offers an accessible entry point into my practice: a self-contained piece where gesture, tension, and framing converge.

Gillian Holding, with a Fine Art degree from Leeds Metropolitan University and a background as a solicitor, works primarily in oil paint, embracing the physicality of her medium on both large canvases and intimate panels. Her instinctive, semi-abstract style blends drawing and painting, often depicting fragmented bodies in transition, using brushes and unconventional tools to leave areas unresolved and evoke emotional ambiguity.
