About this artwork
This painting was made in 2020 at the height of lockdown, at a point when I was pushing the figures to the edge of abstraction. The bodies are entangled, almost dissolving into the colour field, but their gestures still carry urgency and emotional weight. I was interested in how physical presence can hold both strength and fragility at the same time.
It belongs to a series that emerged from drawing and redrawing and losing and finding human forms… in states of tension, support and collapse. I was trying to capture the instability and uncertainty of our shared condition and how we lean on each other, resist, fall and recover.
The saturated reds and oranges came instinctively and heighten the tension. At the same time, fissures and spaces opening between the figures remind me that connection is always precarious and shifting.
This work became an anchor for me: bold in scale and colour but equally about psychological space and feeling.
Gillian Holding, with a Fine Art degree from Leeds Metropolitan University and a background as a solicitor, works primarily in oil paint, embracing the physicality of her medium on both large canvases and intimate panels. Her instinctive, semi-abstract style blends drawing and painting, often depicting fragmented bodies in transition, using brushes and unconventional tools to leave areas unresolved and evoke emotional ambiguity. Through these painterly gestures, she explores themes of liminality and contradiction, ultimately conveying sensations of uncertainty, vulnerability, and the transformative potential found in life’s fissures and fractures.
