About this artwork
This work was created after a visit to the Ruhr region and is part of a series exploring industrial history and personal impressions. The background is in dark, almost sooty tones – a reference to the coal that shaped this place. Red and orange accents evoke fire, heat, energy – the power of mining.
The lines are not merely painted, but are made of real wool threads, partially coated with black paint—symbolizing the coal-dust-blackened face of… a worker. This textile intervention creates a strong tactile contrast to the painting while simultaneously emphasizing the materiality of the subject matter.
The composition appears like a net or a grid—it evokes associations with mine shafts, headframes, or protective devices. At the same time, it remains open to interpretation: Are these traces, scars, structures of memory?
Guoqiang Wu, an honors graduate of a German art school, works primarily with acrylic paints and emphasizes geometry and contrasts. His minimal, reduced style is combined with dynamic lines and varying textures, occasionally employing unusual materials. His artworks reflect his inner emotional worlds, often interspersed with themes of identity, memory, and personal loneliness.
