About this artwork
The work "Nonchalant" tells a personal story. In early 2024, I traveled alone through Cambodia and arrived in the remote province of Ratanakiri—a region characterized by dense jungle and red sand roads. With the owner of a small reggae bar and a companion, I spent three nights in the jungle and visited an indigenous village. This image captures a special moment for me: A little Khmer girl was playing with her mother in the river, wading through the… water, blowing bubbles, and watching us curiously. She reminded me of myself at her age and evoked a feeling of closeness—alone, so far from home. As I began to sketch her, children approached and watched me. I tore the drawing from my notebook and showed it to her. When she recognized herself, a quiet, radiant moment unfolded between two girls who shared no common language, but a shared understanding.
Hannah Bömer draws on her experience in interior design and scenography, working primarily with acrylic paint but also experimenting with plastic and other materials. Her technique combines modern expressionism with surrealist and cartoon-like elements, always remaining open to new material discoveries. Her works transform personal experiences and emotions into multi-layered images that impressively and accessiblely convey a deep inner world of feelings and the experience of sensations.
