About this artwork
This piece is about inspiration and the act of writing. Miller states, “Writing is a huge part of my artistic process in terms of working through ideas and processing my life. It is an empowering practice in many ways. Literacy was at one time a privilege, and women were barred from it for ages. Even today, the majority of people who are illiterate are women. Writing is a way to have your voice heard and the written page becomes a physical manifestation…
of your mind.”

« I’m exploring my relationship with reality and womanhood in both my art and life; within it all, I see angles and curves, depth and flatness, coolness and warmth. »
Hazel Miller is an exciting American talent whose works have featured in exhibitions and prizes in the US and Canada. Drawing inspiration from observations in daily life, such as passing thoughts, moods and feelings, she composes works that focus on the nature of perspective, the female experience and the concepts of internal and external body and mind. Sometimes gestural and loose, sometimes representational, each of Miller's paintings showcase minimalist polish, subtle colour shifts and and a standout aesthetic signature.
