This bronze sculpture captures a powerful moment in time—the relocation of a herd of elephants to a protected game reserve in South Africa. I was commissioned to sculpt this family of four adult elephants and two calves, and in doing so, I sought to honour not just their form, but their journey. Elephants have long been a central subject in my work, not only for their immense beauty but also for the deep emotional bonds they share and the symbolism… they carry in African culture. As my art is inspired by Africa and its magnificent wildlife in this piece, I wanted to reflect the strength, unity, and grace of these animals as they moved together into a new landscape—a place of safety and sanctuary. The positioning of the elephants, close-knit and purposeful, speaks to their familial connection and resilience. Sculpting them was both a technical and emotional process, and I hope viewers can sense the story of protection, hope, and harmony that this herd represents.
Heinrich Filter is a self-taught sculptor whose deep connection to the African wilderness—shaped by over a decade as a professional safari guide—lies at the heart of his work. Specialising in bronze, he creates powerful, handcrafted pieces that fuse lifelike realism with expressive abstraction and refined, timeless form. Inspired by Africa’s wildlife, people, and tribal heritage, Filter’s sculptures convey presence, dignity, and emotional depth. Every piece is personally crafted by the artist—from mould-making and wax work to casting, chasing, and patination—ensuring a singular vision from start to finish. His work balances classical technique with a contemporary sensibility, creating enduring pieces that celebrate the raw beauty and spirit of Africa.
