I created this piece as an exploration of sculpture and function through the visual language of the African bush.
It began with a memory of open savanna — giraffes moving slowly across the horizon beneath a spreading tree, their forms creating rhythm and balance. Above them, a solitary leopard traces its path along a branch, a quiet reminder that life unfolds in layered, often unseen ways. The structure grows organically, echoing the branching geometry… of trees in the African landscape and transforming it into architectural form.
I sculpt, cast and finish each table by hand in my South African foundry. The bronze retains its tactile surface, sealed in a warm earth-toned patina, while the natural stone top introduces calm and weight.
I am drawn to the idea that sculpture does not belong only on a pedestal. It can live within a home, supporting objects that carry personal history. Each table is individually made, and no two will ever be the same.
Heinrich Filter is a self-taught sculptor whose deep connection to the African wilderness—shaped by over a decade as a professional safari guide—lies at the heart of his work. Specialising in bronze, he creates powerful, handcrafted pieces that fuse lifelike realism with expressive abstraction and refined, timeless form. Inspired by Africa’s wildlife, people, and tribal heritage, Filter’s sculptures convey presence, dignity, and emotional depth. Every piece is personally crafted by the artist—from mould-making and wax work to casting, chasing, and patination—ensuring a singular vision from start to finish. His work balances classical technique with a contemporary sensibility, creating enduring pieces that celebrate the raw beauty and spirit of Africa.
