The rhino's horn evolved as a defensive weapon. And yet it is no defense against man's greed'.
This paradox sits at the core of this work—its strength and vulnerability cast in bronze. Elevated on a warm stone base, the rhino becomes a symbol not only of raw wilderness but of its precarious place in our world. A haunting tribute to one of Africa’s most iconic and endangered creatures, the sculpture stands as both an artwork and a quiet protest.… This sculpture was inspired by the first time I encountered a black rhino while sculpting in the field. All I could see was its massive head protruding from behind a bush—silent, still, and watching. That moment stayed with me. I chose to capture just the head in bronze, emerging from shadow much like it did that day, and finished it in a verdigris blue patina to reflect both its ancient strength and its fragility.
Heinrich Filter is a self-taught sculptor whose deep connection to the African wilderness—shaped by over a decade as a professional safari guide—lies at the heart of his work. Specialising in bronze, he creates powerful, handcrafted pieces that fuse lifelike realism with expressive abstraction and refined, timeless form. Inspired by Africa’s wildlife, people, and tribal heritage, Filter’s sculptures convey presence, dignity, and emotional depth. Every piece is personally crafted by the artist—from mould-making and wax work to casting, chasing, and patination—ensuring a singular vision from start to finish. His work balances classical technique with a contemporary sensibility, creating enduring pieces that celebrate the raw beauty and spirit of Africa.
