About this artwork
With the construction of the Grossglockner High Alpine Road, Austria’s highest mountain became accessible to a wider public and very well known.
Anyone who has climbed this mountain three times on different routes, like the artist, develops a special relationship with the Grossglockner. This is also reflected in this picture!
In his painting style, Herwig Port approaches the motif very directly, no embellishment or correction. Every brushstroke… remains present. Viewed from a distance, the Glockner appears beautiful, almost romantic, but if you go closer to the picture, the ruggedness, even brutality, of the massif becomes visible. This is what happens to the mountaineer! Viewed from below, in the warm sun, everything is idyllic. But when you reach the height of the glacier and feel the wind, the cold, the thin air, you realize the power of the force of nature.
Herwig Port is one of the most versatile painters who makes full use of his craftsmanship. As a young child, he spent a lot of time in his grandfather's studio and was taught oil painting techniques. This enabled him to develop a broad spectrum of painterly expressiveness. Herwig Port creates luminous oil paintings characterized by harmonious coloration. His technique is based on thin, translucent layers of paint that allow the white of the canvas to shine through and their luminosity is reminiscent of church windows. His themes are the beauty of transience, expressed through autumnally colored vine leaves and the play of light in mountain and lake landscapes, which he often depicts in a highly abstract or almost photorealistic manner. In his work, it is important to him to always maintain a childlike curiosity in order to remain creative. This creativity lends his works their special expressiveness.
