"Witness" depicts a figure who has seen more than they can recount. The incised lines and dots appear as traces of past experiences, signs whose meaning remains ambiguous. The face does not appear as a portrait of a specific person, but rather as a repository of memory.
The sculpture stands on a column made of historic bongossi wood from Friesland. This particularly durable wood was used for many years in hydraulic engineering for bridges and harbor… facilities. Traces of its use have been deliberately left as part of the artwork.
