About this artwork
I work from old black and white photographs for my Livestock Market series. Three Farmers is painted in muted colours to retain the feeling of nostalgia but with a flash of mustard yellow for the waistcoat on the central figure to make it contemporary - you could describe the style as 'modern nostalgia' - a familiar subject painted with a contemporary, expressive hand. These three were studying the sheep at Hereford market in 1978. The painting…
is professionally framed in a wooden tray frame and hand painted in cream slipper satin.

Jo Willis is a painter with a richly textured journey, beginning her artistic practice in her 50s after inheriting materials from her father and training in oils at various art academies. She employs oils, working with limited colour palettes and focusing on tonal contrast, expressive brushwork, and the dramatic interplay of sunlight and shadows. Her style blends sharp, unblended blocks of colour and strong compositions, often capturing people, animals, and nostalgic scenes. Her art radiates atmosphere and light, expressing the fleeting essence and emotional resonance of a moment remembered or imagined.
