About this artwork
I work from old black and white photographs for my Livestock Market series, often using a reduced colour palette to echo the nostalgia and feel of the original scene. I would describe this as a familiar subject painted with a contemporary, expressive hand. Rooftops focuses on a group of men crowding together to asses the sheep in Tewkesbury livestock market in the 1950s. The painting is professionally framed in a wooden tray frame and hand painted… in cream slipper satin.
Jo Willis is a painter with a richly textured journey, beginning her artistic practice in her 50s after inheriting materials from her father and training in oils at various art academies. She employs oils, working with limited colour palettes and focusing on tonal contrast, expressive brushwork, and the dramatic interplay of sunlight and shadows. Her style blends sharp, unblended blocks of colour and strong compositions, often capturing people, animals, and nostalgic scenes. Her art radiates atmosphere and light, expressing the fleeting essence and emotional resonance of a moment remembered or imagined.
