For my series of livestock and market scenes I work from old black and white photographs. I use a limited colour palette to retain the feeling of nostalgia but add a flash of colour somewhere to make it contemporary. I am drawn to the composition of the photograph - groups of people standing around discussing the animals or buying vegetables. My work can be described as 'modern nostalgia' - a familiar subject painted with a contemporary, expressive… hand.
The original oil painting is sold, therefore the image is available as a high quality limited edition giclee print and comes unframed rolled in a tube. The image size is 12" square plus a border of 2" either side, so 16" total. All prints are individually numbered, named and signed.
Jo Willis is a painter with a richly textured journey, beginning her artistic practice in her 50s after inheriting materials from her father and training in oils at various art academies. She employs oils, working with limited colour palettes and focusing on tonal contrast, expressive brushwork, and the dramatic interplay of sunlight and shadows. Her style blends sharp, unblended blocks of colour and strong compositions, often capturing people, animals, and nostalgic scenes. Her art radiates atmosphere and light, expressing the fleeting essence and emotional resonance of a moment remembered or imagined.
