About this artwork
"Some Heavy Ocean" was painted on ceramic tile as part of the Making Waves series, created during time spent on the Portuguese coast. Where other works in the series capture the ocean's restless momentum, this piece holds something denser — a wave mid-coil, its energy not yet released, suspended in that charged instant before the break.
Deep teal and viridian brushstrokes curl and overlap in layered gestures that evoke the physical weight of a swell… — not the crash, but the gathering. Beneath them, a warm ground of peach, amber, and soft violet glows through like light filtered through moving water, grounding the turbulence in something almost tender. The interplay between fluid, sweeping marks and the cool, structured centre creates a visual tension: movement held, not stopped.
The ceramic surface matters here. An intimate yet powerful work for collectors drawn to expressive abstraction with emotional depth and material presence.
"At the heart of my work is the fascination with capturing the essence of an experience or phenomenon and retelling it in my own visual language — through gesture, colour and rhythm. It’s my way of witnessing something deeper and sharing the uniqueness of it with others."
Joanna Koziej is a painter, printmaker, and visual artist with a background from the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw and international experience in Paris, Japan, and Turkey. She merges painterly, vibrant brushwork with geometric structures, juxtaposing calligraphic gradients, bold patterns, and layers in both ephemeral and sharply defined forms across watercolour, acrylics, ink, and ceramics. Her technique distills fleeting experiences into lively, intricate images that balance spontaneity with structure. Through her art, she conveys a deep sense of presence, inviting viewers to notice, remember, and find quiet reflection in delicate yet powerful moments.
