About this artwork
In Alton, Joanna Pilarczyk captures a moment of introspection in a young man of Jamaican and Dominican heritage, embodying the strength and gentleness that shape his character. Alton, who lives in North London, exudes a quiet resilience and patience that reflect his personal nature and his dedication to others; he works compassionately with young people on the autism spectrum, bringing warmth, intelligence, and kindness to their daily lives. Alton… appears lost in thought in the painting, and his gaze turns inward, as if he is contemplating memories or aspirations. His mind often drifts to Jamaica, a place of deep family roots and cherished memories, yet also of complexities and challenges.
Pilarczyk's portrayal brings out this tension, using her bold neon acrylics and oils to convey Alton's personality vibrancy and the layers of nostalgia and longing for his heritage. The background pulses with clashing colours, echoing the lively energy of London's multicultural essence.
