This work is part of a larger body spanning drawing, sculpture, and photography, centered on large-scale works on paper printed with tripe and graphite. I use stomach lining for its origin, texture, and figuration, which offer a way to inflect space in drawing and register human presence through dispersed volume rather than line. The work privileges impress over depiction and mark-making through pushing out rather than forming an image keyed to a… surface, rebalancing toward touch and physical empathy. Graphite becomes a delicate body-skein, spawning a frothy, transparent skin as gravity scatters across the drawing. The compression and expansion of the tripe cells act as an allegory for how we move through the world—emerging, exceeding, and retreating from our physical selves.
Jody Drafta, a visual artist and sculptor, expresses her creativity through gouache and graphite on paper, having first found her artistic voice through making sculptural models. She intertwines figuration and abstraction, manifesting as aqueous forms drowned in white or standing in stark contrast to each other, presenting an exploration of the relationship between body and space. Injected with visceral emotion and inspiring physical curiosity, Drafta’s works provoke inquiry into our physical and psychic presence, subtly interrogating the way we are separate from and crucially enmeshed with the world around us.
