About this artwork
His enthusiasm for structures, bridges in particular, was inspired by this railway viaduct which he came across in Scotland while attending a confrenec in Edinburgh.
This massive railway viaduct is the longest structure on the Edinburgh & Glasgow Railway, designed by Miller as a high-speed trunk line and constructed from 1838–42.
The eastern section comprises 36 ashlar-faced masonry arches each of 50 ft span, segmental in shape, and up to 70 ft high.… It crosses the Almond Valley in a wide sweeping curve of about 112 miles radius.
A truly magnificent structure which caused him to spend a long time taking in the geometry and mass of the viaduct and reflecting upon how to interpret this in an artform. The resulting artwork puts forward his impressionistic view of the structure and its beautiful curves repeated throughout its length.
It seemed as if a gigantic sculpture has been put down in the landscape to celebrate and fill the flat valley with its splendid form.
