About this artwork
Blemmiae are rather peculiar creatures.
In antiquity and later times, rumors circulated that various types of mythical headless creatures inhabited remote parts of the world. They are known as akephaloi (headless ones) or Blemmyes (Latin: Blemmyae) and are described as headless beings with their facial features on their chests. Initially, they were described as inhabitants of the Nile system (Ethiopia). Later traditions restricted their habitat… to a specific island in the Brisone River or moved it to India.
There are said to be two types of Blemmyes: with eyes on the chest or with eyes on the shoulders.
In the Middle Ages, it was believed that the Blemmiae lived on islands at the outermost edges of the world, beyond the vast realm of the legendary Prester John.

John Rabou, since 1980 artist-illustrator from ’s-Hertogenbosch, The Netherlands.
I specialize in historical and archaeological illustrations and artist impressions. I strive for the greatest possible historical accuracy and plausibility. Until my “retirement,” I also created illustrations for (historical) youth books and biology, anatomy, and medical illustrations. I worked for educational and children's book publishers, heritage institutions, government archaeological services and companies, theme parks, and museums both at home and abroad. In England, I worked with an agent. I have a fascination with classical and medieval mythology.
Nowadays, I initiate and publish my own book projects, usually in collaboration with various writers, like "Wonderwezens" (2017) and "De vlucht van Daidalos" (2022), with author Imme Dros.
For almost 10 years now, I have been working on the designs for an embroidery project in Vlaardingen; a work in progress, when finished measuring about 35-40 m.
