About this artwork
I have always had a particular soft spot for the Minotaur, a tragic, but
powerful figure from Greek mythology. Born as half human, half bull. And not even
through a metamorphosis or as a result of hubris, or through his own fault. No, *he* became
simply born that way, because it pleased the god Poseidon, as punishment for king
Minos of Crete. He was subsequently locked up in solitude in the Labyrinth, a
An ingenious maze, from which no living… creature could escape. Simply
because King Minos wanted to get rid of him, but did not dare to kill him. He
had not asked to be fed with Athenian human flesh either. But
He therefore had to die. So be it, the Athenian hero Theseus.

Credentials
- Works on commission
John Rabou, since 1980 artist-illustrator from ’s-Hertogenbosch, The Netherlands.
I specialize in historical and archaeological illustrations and artist impressions. I strive for the greatest possible historical accuracy and plausibility. Until my “retirement,” I also created illustrations for (historical) youth books and biology, anatomy, and medical illustrations. I worked for educational and children's book publishers, heritage institutions, government archaeological services and companies, theme parks, and museums both at home and abroad. In England, I worked with an agent. I have a fascination with classical and medieval mythology.
Nowadays, I initiate and publish my own book projects, usually in collaboration with various writers, like "Wonderwezens" (2017) and "De vlucht van Daidalos" (2022), with author Imme Dros.
For almost 10 years now, I have been working on the designs for an embroidery project in Vlaardingen; a work in progress, when finished measuring about 35-40 m.
