This work is part of my ongoing exploration of impermanence, the understanding that nothing remains exactly as it is.
Made in Hawai‘i at sunset, this photograph captures a fleeting moment of children reaching toward a drifting bubble beneath a palm tree. The scene lasted only seconds before disappearing.
What drew me to it was the symbolism. A bubble exists only briefly, fragile, weightless, reflective, and already vanishing from the moment it… appears. For me, it becomes a metaphor for memory, youth, joy, and the temporary nature of life itself.
Photography is often described as preserving time, but I see it differently. A photograph does not stop time. It acknowledges that something has already passed.
The softness and motion were intentional, allowing the image to feel less like documentation and more like memory itself, fleeting, emotional, and impossible to hold onto.
Jun Tagai is an international award-winning Documentary Fine Art Photographer based in Hawai‘i. His Documentary Fine Art practice exists at the intersection of documentary observation and fine art interpretation, creating emotionally resonant photographic works defined by visual storytelling, intuitive timing, atmosphere, and a refined artistic sensibility.
Exploring themes of impermanence, memory, and transience, his work is shaped by over two decades of self-directed practice and lived experience. Rather than pursuing perfection, Jun is drawn to fleeting moments, subtle emotion, and the tension of what is already disappearing.
Internationally exhibited and recognized through award-winning work, his photographs invite collectors to slow down, linger, and discover new meaning with each return.
