About this artwork
Two divinely beautiful marble statues, united in eternal beauty by Bernini in the contrasts of desire and rejection. Apollo's cloak is billowing from running, his hair blown away from his face. His gaze is fixed on Daphne, fleeing before him. Only her magnificently sculpted hair stands between them.
It is the dramatic and redeeming moment of Daphne's wish fulfillment, and we witness her metamorphosis with her:
Leaves sprout from her head, a flowering… tendril leans to the left. The fingers of her right hand, dynamically jerked upwards, already transform into twigs.
The drama of the moment causes blossoms of the bay laurel (Kalmia latifolia) to fall across the entire background of the painting – intensified by dark, swirling brushstrokes. The beauty of literature, art, and nature...
