About this artwork
A special sunflower with four petals stands at the center. Its petals touch a sun circle (gold pin). This is enclosed by an arch enclosing the Gotland sun symbol (5th century AD) with a swirl pattern (red ochre).
The sunflower always seeks the sun—here are the deities that symbolize it in various cultures: Bottom left, a stone image of the Aztec god Tonatiuh. The symbolic hands of the sun symbol Aton, depicted above, reach out to it. Egypt, circa… 1355 BC.
On the right, Amaterasu looks down – the sun goddess and most important deity of Japan.
Below, shining in the circle, is the Roman god Sol.
