About this artwork
I captured this black and white Buddhist art print at Akaidake Temple, nestled on Mount Akaidake outside Iwaki City, Fukushima, Japan. A row of Jizo Bodhisattva statues lines the stone path, bathed in sunlight. Jizo, known as the protector of travelers and children, embodies compassion, guidance, and spiritual reflection.
The interplay of light and shadow enhances the weathered stone textures, adding depth and a sense of tranquility. The receding… statues draw the eye along the path, creating a meditative, timeless composition.
Using a Bronica ETRSi 645 medium format camera with Fujifilm Acros II film, I captured the rich tonal gradations that make this piece so striking. Printed on 11 x 14 inch Ilford B&W Glossy WARMTONE archival fiber photo paper, this handcrafted silver gelatin print preserves deep blacks, radiant highlights, and a beautiful organic texture.
