About this artwork
This image is a personal study in simplicity and elegance, a monochromatic exploration of the delicate beauty of cherry blossoms. In Japanese culture, these blossoms symbolize spring, renewal, and the fleeting nature of life—an idea that resonates deeply with me. By capturing this scene in black and white, I wanted to strip away the distraction of color and focus entirely on the shapes, textures, and contrasts.
I arranged the blossoms in a clear… glass bottle, allowing their gentle luminosity to stand out against a muted background. The starkness of the black and white medium emphasizes the softness of the petals and the intricate details of the flowers and branches. I photographed this with a Bronica ETRSi medium format camera using Fujifilm Acros II 100 ISO film, chosen for its wide tonal range and crisp detail. Offered in 11 x 14 inch Ilford B&W Glossy WARMTONE archival fiber photo paper, blending a subtle sheen with warm, profound blacks and velvety whites.
