About this artwork
Burnout
Watercolor on paper – Self-portrait
In this watercolor, I depict myself as a Barbie doll locked in her box, impeccable, fixed smile, surrounded by household accessories as if they were an integral part of the “perfect woman’s kit.” This satirical work questions the mental burden that still weighs heavily on women’s shoulders: you have to be a domestic goddess, an outstanding organizer, a model cook – and all that without ever creasing… your blow-dry.
“Burn Out” is a sharp nod to this social pressure, to this daily absurdity.
If I could put all this in a box and put it on a shelf, I would gladly do it!
In the meantime, I'm transforming it into colors.
Each portrait I create is unique, often made to order – to offer, or to offer to oneself, a moment of recognition and gentleness in a mirror.
Léni Whitford, a former nurse, uses watercolor for small pieces and oil paint for large formats. She masters the realistic, figurative style; her work is marked by colorful contrast, multiple glazes, and meticulous details. Her creations, often supported by female figures, defend causes, criticize current events, or tell stories, all revealed through a balanced chromatic harmony. Her works concentrate vivid emotions, seeking to transcend their framework.
