About this artwork
“I am Nice” is part of a series of four oil paintings in which figures of Marianne embody the different stages of national mourning.
This painting pays tribute to the victims of the attack of July 14, 2016, which occurred on the Promenade des Anglais in Nice.
It depicts a contemporary Marianne, of mixed race, dignifiedly carrying a tricolor flag. Her figure, both dignified and vulnerable, symbolizes a nation in mourning: a silent tear slides down… her cheek as she continues to walk forward, upright, despite the pain.
She embodies a resolutely plural, resilient France, united in times of adversity.
