About this artwork
This work is part of my Marianne series, composed of four portraits evoking national mourning, in homage to the attacks that have plunged France into mourning since 2015.
In this painting, three little girls stand silently in front of teacher Samuel Paty's middle school. Draped in the colors of the French flag, they embody both the innocence of youth and the symbolic burden of the republican heritage. Through them, the responsibility entrusted to… the National Education system is expressed, as well as the hopes placed in it to uphold common values.
Echoing the motto engraved on the façade – Liberty, Equality, Fraternity – three trees, three children, three colours, then three flowers unfold: a visual and poetic progression that weaves a link between nature, childhood and the ideals of the Republic.
Léni Whitford, a former nurse, uses watercolor for small pieces and oil paint for large formats. She masters the realistic, figurative style; her work is marked by colorful contrast, multiple glazes, and meticulous details. Her creations, often supported by female figures, defend causes, criticize current events, or tell stories, all revealed through a balanced chromatic harmony. Her works concentrate vivid emotions, seeking to transcend their framework.
