About this artwork
This painting was made as a response to the expressiveness of a Roman mosaic showing varieties of fish. I borrowed the idea of presenting different fish varieties in a decorative composition and combined it with elements from Japanese paintings of Carp and the palette of Paul Klee's 'The Goldfish'.
I have used historical pigments, ground in egg yolk tempera, and gold leaf on a pine wood panel, prepared with gesso. Where the paint is laid very thinly… over gold leaf, the effect is similar to the pearly skin on the belly of a fish. On the backs of the fish, I have scraped through the thicker paint to reveal the gold beneath, producing shimmering, golden scales.
The dimensions given include the frame, with is fixed and forms part of the artwork. A hook has been attached at the back so that the picture is ready to hang, but it can equally well be displayed on a mini easel, on a bookshelf or mantelpiece.

Lara Broecke's passion for early Italian art was born while living in Florence. She currently lives in France and paints using early Italian techniques - gold leaf and egg tempera paint, made by hand-grinding pigments in egg yolk, on wooden panels coated with gesso. She marries a medieval sensibility with contemporary compositions, creates rich representations of the natural world and man's relationship to it.
