About this artwork
This gold-framed, miniature egg tempera painting conveys a sense of tension and movement in a highly stylised composition. The swirling golden leaves converge on the tiny squirrel, gazing down, apprehensively, at the fox, as it snaps at three birds. The flight of the birds, up around the tree, connects the eye again to the movement of the leaves, drawing it back to where it started.
The painting is on a poplar panel, prepared with white gesso. The… foliage of the tree has been gilded and then coated in a semi-transparent green. This has been scratched through to create the golden leaves. All of the paint has been made by grinding dry pigments by hand in egg yolk and water.
The dimensions given include the frame, which is gilded and fixed. The painted area measures 9cm x 9cm.
The painting is signed and dated on the reverse and has a ring attached, so that it is ready to hang.

Lara Broecke's passion for early Italian art was born while living in Florence. She currently lives in France and paints using early Italian techniques - gold leaf and egg tempera paint, made by hand-grinding pigments in egg yolk, on wooden panels coated with gesso. She marries a medieval sensibility with contemporary compositions, creates rich representations of the natural world and man's relationship to it.
