About this artwork
This shimmering , decorative peacock is painted on a gold ground, using traditional techniques - pure, historical pigments ground in gelatin and egg tempera and gold leaf on a lime wood panel.
The blue azurite, made from a semi-precious stone, and green verdigris (the degradation product of copper) have been hand-ground in a gelatin medium, to give them exceptional luminosity. These colours are painted in various thicknesses over the gold ground.… Where they are thinnest, the effect is sheer, like light reflecting off a peacock's tail feathers.
The aim in this horizontal, framed painting was to delight the eye and calm the soul with soothing colours and the gentle curves of the peacock's neck, back and tail.
The dimensions given include the wooden frame, which is fixed and forms part of the artwork. The painting is signed and dated on the back and a picture wire has been attached so that it is ready to hang.

Lara Broecke's passion for early Italian art was born while living in Florence. She currently lives in France and paints using early Italian techniques - gold leaf and egg tempera paint, made by hand-grinding pigments in egg yolk, on wooden panels coated with gesso. She marries a medieval sensibility with contemporary compositions, creates rich representations of the natural world and man's relationship to it.
